Knowing what your present duty is important; it may involve taking care of your family or paying off debt or doing your job well. We must remember that every action we take has consequences – for good or bad – so choosing wisely is key. Once we understand this and make conscious choices aligned with our higher purpose, then karma begins to work positively for us rather than against us; turning from a destructive force into a life-enhancing one—in other words from karma to dharma (one’s true calling).
Conscious living entails being aware of our thoughts, words, and actions and accepting that they have consequences. We can align ourselves with our higher purpose and make positive choices that lead to positive outcomes by knowing what our current duty is and choosing to fulfill it with conscious effort.

Our current responsibilities may change depending on our life circumstances. For some, it may entail taking care of family or loved ones, while for others, it may entail paying off debt or performing well at work. It is critical to recognize that every action we take has consequences, and it is our responsibility to make conscious choices that align with our higher purpose.

We begin to transform karma into dharma when we consciously choose to fulfill our current duty. This means that we are reversing negative actions and creating a more fulfilling life for ourselves. This doesn’t mean being disconnected from life; quite the opposite: by accepting mortality and viewing circumstances objectively you become acutely aware of reality as it truly is. From this perspective, you begin to assert your immortal self as distinct from your material existence to reach your ultimate goal: self-realization. Here too difficulties arise but by maintaining focus on the journey ahead you can overcome them more easily and ride through any difficult patches faster than before.
Being detached allows us to look at our life situations objectively and see them for what they are. We become more aware of the reality around us as we accept the impermanence of life and embrace detachment. This increased awareness allows us to distinguish our immortal self from our material existence, which is an important aspect of self-realization.

Detachment does not imply abandoning life; rather, it means accepting life as it is without becoming emotionally attached to the outcomes. We become emotionally invested in the outcomes of our actions when we are emotionally attached to the outcomes of our actions, and we can become overwhelmed by the consequences. Anxiety, stress, and despair can result from this attachment. We can free ourselves from these negative emotions and become more focused on our ultimate goal by embracing detachment.

Difficulties and challenges will inevitably arise, but by staying focused on the path ahead, we will be able to overcome them more easily. Being detached enables us to keep our heads above water and see these challenges objectively, rather than becoming overwhelmed by them. We can move through karma faster and avoid causing more damage and suffering by riding through these difficult patches.

An important part of the process of healing karma involves learning how to accept tests and challenges as temporary states along one’s journey toward divine understanding—rather than seeing them as insuperable obstacles which will never go away. By understanding the nature of karmic cycles you realize that all experiences pass eventually whether they are joyful or full of pain; thus allowing yourself to move through them with greater ease knowing that they do not define you eternally.


When faced with difficult situations in life, it is natural to feel overwhelmed and to believe that we will never be able to overcome them. Understanding the nature of karmic cycles, on the other hand, and accepting them as temporary states, can help us move through them with greater ease.

We can make more rational decisions and act in accordance with our true selves when we are detached.

She instructed them on how they should respect the land and its resources by using them only when necessary and being mindful of their impact on the environment. She also gave them the sacred pipe which serves as a bridge between humanity, nature, and spirit. To this day, the legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman is passed down through generations and remains an important part of their cultural heritage. 

B. The Hopi people and the Kachina spirits: The Hopi believe in powerful spirit beings called Kachinas, who are said to originate from the stars and serve as intermediaries between humans and the divine. 

The Kachinas are believed to bring rain, help with the harvest and protect the Hopi people. They are seen as teachers and guides, imparting wisdom and teaching skills such as farming, weaving, and pottery-making. Every year in late winter they return to the villages in a special celebration known as Niman Kachina. During this time, ritual dances are performed in their honor. Offerings are left for them to show respect and gain favor from them. Different Kachinas have different roles, but all of them serve to remind the Hopi of their cultural heritage and beliefs. 

C. The Iroquois people and the Sky Woman: In Iroquois cosmology, the Sky Woman is a celestial being who descended from the heavens to create the Earth and give life to all living beings. 

According to Iroquois beliefs, Sky Woman was the source of all things and gave birth to two sons who were tasked with creating the land and bringing forth the animal, plant, and human life we know today. One son built the Earth on which we live, while the other created rivers, mountains, and forests. To this day, Sky Woman is seen as a symbol of creation and is honored in various ceremonies that are held throughout the year. Karma Yoga is an ancient spiritual practice. It is a path of selfless service that emphasizes performing every act with dedication and devotion, without any expectation of rewards or benefits. In today’s world where people are driven by materialistic desires and selfish motives, the relevance of Karma Yoga is even more significant as it teaches us to live life for higher purposes and take actions for the benefit of others rather than for personal gain. This article will provide an overview of Karma Yoga, highlighting its key principles, values, and importance in helping us achieve personal and spiritual growth.  

Karma Yoga translates to “Yoga of Action” in Sanskrit. In this practice, we find virtue and happiness in carrying out our duties with dedication and hard work, regardless of the outcome or results. We serve unselfishly without expecting anything in return but only to do our best with humility and commitment. The core principle behind Karma Yoga lies in understanding that all our actions have consequences that ultimately shape our destinies.

In the ancient and sacred tradition of yoga, Ashtanga Yoga holds a special place as a powerful and transformative practice. It is my deepest honor to share with you the wisdom and teachings that I have been fortunate enough to receive from my guru and the experiences of my journey in Ashtanga Yoga. 

Ashtanga, meaning “eight limbs” in Sanskrit, refers to the eight-fold path outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. These eight limbs serve as a guide for the practitioner, leading to a life of balance, inner peace, and ultimately, self-realization. 

  1. Yama (ethical guidelines) 
  2. Niyama (personal observances) 
  3. Asana (physical postures) 
  4. Pranayama (breath control) 
  5. Pratyahara (sense withdrawal) 
  6. Dharana (concentration) 
  7. Dhyana (meditation) 
  8. Samadhi (ultimate absorption) 

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, the practice I have been blessed to share, places great emphasis on the synchronization of breath and movement. Through a specific sequence of asanas, the practitioner creates an internal heat that purifies the body, mind, and spirit. It is essential to approach this practice with dedication, discipline, and a sincere heart.

Chapter 2: The Breath – The Life Force of Ashtanga Yoga 

In the sacred practice of Ashtanga Yoga, the breath serves as the foundation upon which all else is built. Just as the wind moves the leaves on a tree or the currents stir the depths of the ocean, so does the breath animate and enliven our inner being. It is through the breath that we find harmony, balance, and ultimately, the union of body, mind, and spirit. 

The breath in Ashtanga Yoga is known as Ujjayi Pranayama or “victorious breath.” This special breathing technique creates a subtle sound, reminiscent of the ocean’s waves or the gentle whisper of the wind. Ujjayi Pranayama is achieved by gently constricting the back of the throat, allowing the breath to pass through a narrowed passage. This constriction creates internal heat, purifies the body, and brings focus to the mind. 

As you begin your practice, allow the Ujjayi breath to guide you through each asana, uniting breath and movement in a seamless dance. Inhale as you extend and create space; exhale as you fold and release. Cultivate a rhythm that is steady and consistent, like the heartbeat of a drum. 

The breath is both the anchor and the compass of the practice. When the body encounters resistance or the mind becomes agitated, return to the breath. Surrender to its wisdom, and let it guide you through the turbulence, finding calm amidst the storm. 

In the practice of Ashtanga Yoga, the breath also serves as the foundation for the application of Bandhas, or energy locks. These subtle yet powerful engagements refine the flow of energy within the body, bringing stability, lightness, and grace to the practice. 

There are three primary Bandhas: 

  1. Mula Bandha (root lock): Engage the pelvic floor muscles, lifting and drawing them inward, creating a sense of grounding and stability. 
  2. Uddiyana Bandha (abdominal lock): Gently draw the lower abdomen in and up, just below the navel, cultivating a sense of lightness and support for the spine. 
  3. Jalandhara Bandha (throat lock): Slightly tuck the chin toward the chest while lifting the sternum, elongating the back of the neck and creating a subtle lock that supports the breath. 

As you progress in your practice, the integration of Ujjayi breath and the Bandhas will become more intuitive and natural. Their union creates an internal dance of energy, guiding you deeper into the heart of Ashtanga Yoga.
